2017 saw a shift in the public conversation about sexual assault and harassment. For the first time in history women were speaking out about their attackers and the attackers have faced serious and real consequences.
2017 also saw a shift the conversation about sexual trauma and the impacts of sexual assault, abuse, and harassment out of the quiet and relatively dark corners into the public spotlight.
These shifts are important for the collective and for us to move from a rape-culture to a consent-culture. They are essential for our movement towards gender-equality. They are vital in our work of smashing our oppressive, misogynist, patriarchal culture.
These shifts can also have very real and painful fallout for individuals. As these shifts have occurred, with more women speaking up about their own sexual trauma histories, many other women with sexual trauma histories have found themselves “triggered” and are experiencing more intense symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PSTD. With these intense reactions, many are finding themselves isolated and seeking support, a space to talk about current events and how it is impacting them personally, and to learn some simple, practical tools to help them cope with the onslaught of emotions and sensations that crop up as more and more of these events are brought into the public light.
As we move into 2018, this support group is meant to be such a space. We will meet virtually on-line via Facebook and Zoom to create a community of support, discuss current events around sexual assault, abuse, and harassment and how they are impacting us personally, and to learn some very simple and practical tools to help soothe our nervous systems and bring us back to ground and center.
This is NOT a trauma processing program or group. If you are seeking ways to process trauma in community, this is not the group for you (and instead I invite you to explore the Trauma Informed Embodiment Level 1 program I am offering or my Individual Sessions work). It is a group however to create community, to come out of our individual isolation, and to have real time conversations about the impacts of living in a world that is rapidly shifting the conversation about sexual abuse, rape, and sexual harassment.
As a licensed marriage and family therapist associate in the state of Washington, my main focus is trauma, grief, embodiment and their intersections. I have studied and applied clinically family systems, feminist theory, cultural systems, trauma and its impacts, embodiment, and more. I have six years of experience facilitating groups both on-line and in-person. I believe it is vital for those of us with the tools and skills to hold spaces for women to gather together and discuss these topics to do so, and because of this I have decided to create and facilitate this group.
