Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare. ~Audre Lorde

During the second presidential debate last year, I was fully and deeply triggered. Watching the man who is currently the president of the US walk and glower and talk and gaslight and and and… it brought up all my PTSD. I literally sat shaking watching, I couldn’t turn away, frozen. My husband and I argued, loudly, because he was trying to have a rational conversation with me and I was no where near my rational brain. It took literally days for me to come back into my body. Days. And I am a therapist, trained in crisis and trauma. I know all the exercises and tricks. I also knew in the moment exactly what was happening and I while I knew what was going on, I couldn’t stop it beyond screaming at my husband to not talk to me. And at one point I was able to break away and gulp down a huge glass of water.
I didn’t watch the third debate.
I didn’t watch the inauguration.
I avoid his image as much as I can.
I know I am not alone in this reaction.
What he and his cabinet have been doing since taking office has many of us on high alert, our nervous systems activated, our anxiety elevated.
We have a lot of work to do in resisting and disrupting this regime. We have both short games that need our immediate and full response and we have the longer game of tearing down the patriarchy and creating a world where all people are free and liberated.
And if we don’t care for ourselves during this time, if we don’t soothe our nervous systems and get very clear on our boundaries and stay centered and present in our body and our frontal lobe, we will burn out before the first day of spring.
We each have an important roles to play in the coming months and years. One of my roles is offering support to others, so you can continue your fight on the ground and in the trenches in your own unique way.
This three month workshop that will focus on practical tools to help you keep your nervous system calm, you connected to your frontal lobe where both empathy and logic live, and firm in your personal boundaries so you do not become overwhelmed and burnt out.
Each week I will send you an email with a specific exercise or three for you to practice on you own. Every weekday I will also offer discussion prompts within our private Facebook group where we can share in community our responses to the exercises or if we are resisting practicing them and gain support in learning to care deeply for our nervous system and being. During our monthly group calls we will practice some of the exercises as a group, and talk about how they are feeling, and also to simply vent our frustrations about the world as we need to do. .
The outline for our six months together is:
This workshop circle is open to all women (CIS, Transgender, AFAB non-binary). This workshop will be especially helpful for those who have experienced trauma in their lives, find themselves feeling overly anxious and/or triggered due to the current political happenings in the United States, are activists who need tools for self care to stay in the fight for the long haul, and/or therapists and coaches who not only want to learn new tools for themselves, but also to pass on to their own clients.
Space is limited to 20 participants. There are currently 13 spaces available.
Please Note: We will be discussing the current political climate and events in our online space and on our phone calls. To be clear I am in full support of resisting and disrupting the current regime and stopping the atrocious human rights and civil liberties violations that are happening. I will not tolerate any of the following within our group space: Racism, homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, xenophobia, Islamaphobia, misogyny, or ablism. I understand we are all in a constant state of unraveling and unlearning our own internalized -isms and implicit biases, and our group space will not be the place for this. If you are called-in about something you have said, our group space is not the place to debate it nor to become defensive but instead is a place to practice calming your nervous system and learning to tolerate being wrong or making a mistake, and engaging your curiosity. We are all in this together.
By registering for this workshop circle you are committing to engaging in our online forum, attending at least one group call per month, and spending approximately one to two hours per week practicing the exercises and journaling about your experience with them. You are also committing to paying the full price for this workshop circle. Refunds will not be made after our start date of May 1. It is expected if you are on the monthly payment plan that you will pay all three payments on time. To see my full office and refund policy click here.
